What is WITH this clutch bleed stuff?!

So I flushed the brake fluid on the Aero, finally found my clutch pressure bleed cap (I'd left it attached to the air pump - DUH!), and decided to flush the clutch hydraulics. So I fill the reservoir to the brim, do the pressure bleed, and find that I get air bubbles if the fluid drops even half an inch in the new setup (in the 91, you could usually bleed down at least an inch). So I carefully bleed, keeping the reservoir full almost to the brim, until all the air is gone and the fluid looks new. Then I try the clutch and it goes to the floor! I next tried the Townsend trick of pushing the pedal down a very small amount and then releasing it ... after repeatedly doing this, the pedal came back up. Still had a couple of inches of dead travel at the top, so topped the reservoir up to the brim again, gave one more shot of pressure, cracked the bleed nipple and a few more air bubbles came out. After that the pedal was good, so I buttened it all up, sucked out the excess fluid so I could get the float assembly back into the reservoir, and vowed to leave it along for a long time! I HATE bleeding Saab clutches!
