Hi Julia,
I had a very similar problem recently. All lights worked until something else was switched on and then the pictogram came up with the "No Brake-Lights" warning. I traced it to mildly corroded contacts in the rear-light clusters (both sides). ALL the bulb-bases AND their contacts needed cleaning. The problem is some sort of white dust whch results from aluminium corrosion. Vaseline stops it coming back. I think that the problem comes from the lights operating at their thresh-hold of the available voltage. Any other load on the electrical system pushes them over this limit and the system detects a fault. The next thing to check is the high-level brake-light. People check their brake-lights via the rear-view mirror, but always miss that middle light. It had me foxed for a couple of weeks!
Hope that this helps.
