I used the Townsend site instructions. After completing the drain plug I poured a quart of oil through the trans. then filled and drove for 5 miles then drained again to flush really well. I use Mobil 1 15/50 but everyone says not to use synthetic oil in the 5 speed unless it is the SAAB synthetic. Mobil 1 has worked really well for me for over 20,000 miles. Shifting is very smooth, especially for an '86 turbo with a total of 217,000 miles.

I do not recommend installing a level plug, instead use the engine oil dipstick at the filler plug location near the speedometer cable location. I got sick of using the level plug on my 97 CSE and marked my engine oil dipstick with a points file after making sure that I could repeat the measurement in the filler plug.

Make sure the tap you use is for pipe threads and not normal threads. Don't tap all the way in either. Do a little at a time and then test the plug. The treads taper and the plug gets tighter as you screw it in more creating a better seal. I recommend using a bit of teflon tape on the plug to help seal.
