good question... Posted by andrew [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: why 16 valves?, nt moore, Wed, 11 Sep 2002 09:15:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Idea, as otheres have stated is better flow.. 2 or more intake valves simply flow more than a single even tho substantially larger valve.. you do the math:-) At one point Honda used 8 Valve configurations on their all out racing Motorcycle engines.. but these utlized rectangular pistons/bores to enable the 'fit'.. won lotsa races , but has been currently shelved for undisclosed reasons.
Rpm is also (mainly actually) limited by the ability of the valvetrain to operate accurately at very high rotational speeds.. lotsa monkey motion in there.. any thing that reduces mass helps this. But entire engineering departments have evolved on this aspect alone.
VW currently uses the.. YAMAHA.. designed 5 valve head in favour of the actually poorly executed Oettinger 16 v head previously produced... Tuners have steadfastly maintained over the years that the vw8v head was almost as efficient as the 'old' 16v.. and if you will notice the 'New' 8v VW head is now of crossflow design, a performance improvement in itself.
Interestingly the Saab 16v head has been used by Honda (for one) as a teaching tool for it's design engineers as to 'how not to design a 16v Cylinder Head'.. YES it's true ;-) seem the design is/was? 'less' than optimal.
