I have a '97 9000 Aero and my wife has a '99 9-5 2.3lpt sedan so I have some experience with both.
If reliability is the primary issue I'd definitely go for the 9000. By 1997, they had 12 years of tweaking and refining to produce a great, reliable car.
On the other hand, 1998 was the first year for the 9-5 and I hear it had quite a few "issues". My wife's 99 has had considerably more trouble than my 9000. And it's harder and more expensive to fix - the systems are much more complex. Compared to current models, the 9000 is pretty "low-tech".
Between the two cars, the 9-5's advantages are more features, a more "refined" feel, and I like the interior a bit better although not some of the ergonomics. For some reason I don't fully understand the shifter feel is a lot better. It also has a *way* better stereo.
In the 9000's favor are much better handling and acceleration (of course it's not a fair comparison: an Aero to an LPT), easier to maintain and repair, more cargo room (no folding seats in the 9-5). It was also a little cheaper, and gets about the same gas mileage (partly because I drive more conservatively than the wife, partly because it weighs less I think).
Don't take this to mean I'm putting the 9-5 down too much! I'd be very happy to own either car, I just like the 9K a little better.
