Both my old 1990 car and the present 1993 CSE kept their batteries on the left-hand side of the engine compartment, well back near the wheel arch. The downpipe – well, you know where that goes, unless I'm missing something?
The JT 3" system certainly avoids the battery and is probably the easiest way to go, even though fitting it so it doesn't leak can be problematic.
