the fluid level? I am assuming the gearbox is the same as on the 4-cylinder cars. I'm sure you know the routing but just in case, here it is, as paraphrased from Haynes –
Warm up the car/transmission with a short drive and park on level ground.
With the engine idling, select "D" for about 15 seconds, then select "R" for a further seconds. Do the same in "P", and leave the engine idling.
Take out the dipstick and wipe it clean. Put it back in, all the way, pull it out and check the fluid level. There are two sets of marks – with an engine at normal operating temperature, use the upper set. The "Max" mark for the "cold" or 40 degree reading is the "Min" mark for the "hot" or 80 degree range.
After topping up if necessary, drive a bit and check again. You are quite right – too much fluid is bad (as is grotty burned black soup with bits in it).
I have to say that the level check described in the handbook for my '93 car misses out all the gear-selecting bit completely but if you are concerned for accuracy it makes sense to go for it.
