MPG vs. PCV ???

I've been doing some work on my 93 9000 CSE Turbo and have a bunch of questions. I'll limit it to one for now ;)
I noticed the PCV check valve was missing - purchased a new one from Eeuroparts - and installed it. Now, my MPGs -- which I'd been able to get up to over 25 dropped down to around 20. Why?
I thought it might be something else, but when I disconnected the tubing the MPG went right back up to 27-28 mpg.
Just to confirm, which way should the valve allow air to flow? towards or away from the intake manifold? Do I have to get that special foam covered tubing from the valve to the intake or can I just use regular vacuum hose?
Also on my engine, the nipple is actually part of the manifold (a smooth little metal piece sticking up) however - since the nipple is smooth there's nothing for the tube to grab onto. It keeps slipping off the intake manifold when I'm driving. It appears the OEM foam covered tube has some L-shaped piece that grabs on but I don't feel like spending $65 on 1 foot of hose if I don't need to. Can I use a clamp instead?
--
One other MPG question -- since I saw that the 9k is supposed to be the fastest car on the market from 50 to 85 MPG or something I thought I'd check it out! ;) However when I started going that high I noticed that the fuel consumption went through the roof to the point that it was all the way down to 7 MPG when I got up to 85+ (of course - only for the purposes of a scientific experiment! :) Should it be eating up that much fuel at that speed?
TIA,
Phil
