more like it...
I don't know if the two look alike when they're dirty but I'd guess so. Here's one way to tell. Have a friend pump the clutch pedal a bunch of times. While he's pumping look (with flashlight) at the slave actuating. (you should be able to see the slave and throw-out bearing through the inspection port on the top of the transmission) You might see fluid leaking from the bottom of the bell housing, you might hear fluid spraying, you might see nothing at all (which would be best).
As to master cylinder replacement(what I remember from doing it on my '87):
(1) figure out how you're going to pressure bleed the system (bike tube, garden sprayer, spare tire, your mouth(not recomended), compressor...)
(2) remove the plastic shield over the master cylinder (two torx nuts, several clips)
(3) attach a drain hose (simple plastic tube from home depot) to the bleed nipple attached to the slave cylinder and then loosen that with a 13mm wrench (I think 13mm)
(4) apply pressure to the hydraulic fluid reservoir to push out all of the old fluid (will exit through the bleed nipple which may need to be further loosened, should try to collect it in something as it is toxic and stains the paint on your car - especially noticable on allow wheels)
(5) now that the system is mostly empty (you should hear gurgling when it is) you can loosen the union at the top of the master cylinder - I think 12mm wrench is appropriate
(6) also undo the two mounting bolts on the firewall holding the master down. these are most easily accessed with a 13 or 14mm socket, a long extension and a swivel. Is possible to do with a wrench - not very much fun though.
(7) remove the supply line from the side of the master cylinder as well. this will probably leak some fluid.
(8) finally you'll have to climb down by the clutch pedal and find the pin that links the bottom of the clutch master to the top of the clutch pedal. There's a little clip holding the pin in place. A flashlight helps.
installation is roughly the reverse of these steps. I think the hardest part is reinstalling the pin linking the master and pedal.
