Hi Ari,
Well, I've decided to replace the ECU based on a lot of trial and error so far. The car started sputtering one day back in early August, as if it were running out of gas. It happened about 4 miles from my house, I shut the car off, and re-started, and it was okay for the rest of the trip. However, this continued the next time I started the car. I have since been trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with it. First off, I had it towed to our family mechanic who replaced the fuel filter and tested the fuel pump. Both of which did nothing. The DI cassette doesn't seem to be the culprite because if you let the car idle rough upon starting it, after a few minutes the car will run smoothly and it is then perfectly driveable. I guess it would have to be something electric or a sensor, b/c it does eventually run right. Since this time, I've been at college so my father has been working on it, (thanks Dad!). Anyway, my dad has replaced the coolant sensor, and cleaned the AIC valve as well as checked for vacuum leaks. We also replaced the Air mass meter last fall so it probably isn't that. We replaced the air mass meter because the car would race at idle. The symptoms now aren't the same as before so we don't think it's that.
Based on all these failed attempts to correct the problem, and by reading these bulletin boards for ideas, we've decided to try the ECU next. I only hope this is it. I'd certainly be glad to share the news with you guys! If you've got any ideas based on this description, I'd certainly appreciate your input. Thanks!
