What your mechanic and KeithG state about the alarm ECU is correct. The only way to recover is to get the transmitter to work or replace the ECU.

Take the batteries out of the transmitter immediately. Obtain some ionized water from a drug store or grocery store. Distilled water is fine.

Soak the fob without the batteries for at least 10 minutes, longer (ca. 1 hr) if it has dried out. Swirl it around in the water (agitation) periodically.

Remove from water and blow out excess water with clean air - preferably not by blowing by mouth.

Let dry overnight (a hair drier will accelerate the drying, but excess heat could destroy the electronics).

Try the fob with a fresh batteries. If it doesn't work after several tries, repeat and after the water flush, soak in isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) that does not contain glycerine or softening agents (a close to 100% pure reagent grade as you can obtain).

If that doen't work, visit a junk yard and find a matched set of transmitter and ECU for your car.
