This is why the rear deck was raised on post '92 9000s. It was not an aesthetic consideration or to increase trunk space, it greatly increases the safety of a rear end colision.
The most obvious exaples are the Volvo s40/s60/s80 - they have this very defined hump on the trunk section, which is created by the crease on top of the rear fenders.
In fact, if you look at almost all of the modern sedans (including Saab), you will see that they incorporate a high rear deck design, most with at least a subtle rising crease that runs from front to rear, starting at the front fenders, along the beltline, to the tops of the rear fenders.
This is as much a testament to increasing safety among all vehicles, as it is to a general uniformity of styling among sedans.
