Now start panicking. I have looked at the Townsend Imports diagnostic pages (as can you – find them in the Sponsors section, go to Saabmaster Suite) and their flow chart doesn't say anything about your problem. Nobody else has come up with a constructive idea. So, depending on the mileage of your car – which is 10 years old – it sounds as though you are looking at a rebuild, because the transmission will have to come out of the car anyway.
First step must be to take it to a specialist (ie. a transmission specialist) who can give you a proper diagnosis.
Hope I'm wrong, because there is a cost involved but when my transmission failed at 110K I decided it was well worth rebuilding. The rebuild cost me about £1,400 including tax, which is about $2,100, but a figure often quoted on this board is $2,500.
