Thanks everybody for your help regarding my hydraulic lifters. I spoke with Jim Moncrief at Sobstory, intending to replace the faulty lifters, and he encouraged me to clean them, which I did this morning. They all work now! He also recommended the same test that aeroblues mentioned, which is to place the head upright and squirt a little WD-40 or gasoline through the intake or exhaust ports to see if the valve seats are tight.

The results are that I do get a little "weeping" of the fluid around all the exhaust valves. The liquid took about a minute or two to appear. I installed the cam, opened each valve in turn and squirted the area out, then repeated the test, with the same result.

So my question is: is this OK? Jim Moncrief said no fluid should appear. I did have the valves lapped, but I didn't ask him whether he used the fine paste. TIA
