Ok, the question is really about a BMW, but I pose it here for three reasons:
- My roomate has a 92 9k Griffin that this board has been extremely helpful in diagnosing. (he researches the board then passes the info along to me so I can do the work)
- Both brands use almost the exact same Bosch parts and seem to fail in just about the exact same ways.
- The individuals on this board are far, far smarter than anyone on those crappy BMW boards.

At any rate, the car suddenly has developed an intermittent non-start condition. It will crank but not fire. The spark plugs are dry, but a good tap to the top of the fuel pump will get it to go. Sounds like a pump, right?

At idle, however, the engine will die for about a 1/2 second and then surge as the DME cathces up. It has not stored any fault codes (which I confirmed by unplugging the air mass meter while running and it did store that code).

If the pump was truly dying, then wouldn't it malfunction only under high demand conditions (not idle)?
