Not too long ago, I picked up a beautiful '93 9000 CS Turbo with about 185000 miles on it. It's been running great, with no problems whatsoever.. until today, that is.

I was driving on the interstate about about 70 mph and noticed an intermittent clunking noise. It didn't coincide with any bumps in the road or anything, and only seemed to happen above 70 mph. It was hard to pinpoint the source of the sound, but it seemed to be coming from the front driver's side wheel well. I couldn't feel the clunks in the steering, the pedals or the floor. It didn't really _seem_ to be affecting anything.

Anyway, I kept going and the clunking got worse. It showed up at lower and lower speeds until it was almost constant clunk-clunk-clunk at 60 mph. I pulled into a gas station, and in less than five minutes, almost all of my power steering fluid had drained on to the parking lot. So, I refilled it, bought up the gas station's stock of power steering fluid, and headed for the nearest mechanic. I was told that my power steering pump's seals had failed and I'd need a new pump - $400 some dollars, they told me.

I filled the power steering reservior again and headed for home, 200 miles away, stopping every so often to re-fill the reservoir. On the return trip, the clunking never showed up again, but I did keep the car below 65 the whole way. Steering was a little harder at low speeds, but, hey, my power steering is gone, so that was sort of expected.

Finally, my question: What could this clunking be from, and was it in any way related to the power steering system? Or is it something else entirely different, that will cost me more money I don't really have?

I did get the car checked by two independent mechanics before I bought it last month, and apart from some brake wear and worn rear anti-roll bar bushings, there was nothing wrong with it.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
