I've owned 9 Saabs over the years, matter of fact, never been without one since I got my license and I love them. I've read that the automatic is far worse than the 5 spd, but the five spd is no champ. I had an 83 900T that didn't like first or second gear (common synchro problems). I had an 89 9000T and lost 5th gear (BTW this is not advertised much, but was a common occurrence). I now have a 94 Aero with 128K that needs a transmission. Perhaps you can explain the shortage of 5 speed transmissions at the refurb centers (up to 4Wk lead times with customers in the queue)? A local indie told me that he keeps spare a 900 5 speed built up since his may fail at any time. True that most claim the newer 9000 5spds are trouble free, but now that they are getting some miles on them they are beginning to fail. Funny, another Aero owner is waiting on trans at the local indie. Perhaps Saab is fitting a less sturdy trans than required to these higher torque engines. Again, I love Saabs. I just hate the WEAK transmissions. Oh, of the 9 Saab I've owned, four have been automatics and none have ever given me a problem. Only one 5spd never gave me a problem and it was fitted to a naturally aspirated 900S (hmm).

When I was a teenager and a lot rougher on cars, I drove my mother's VW Golf 5spd like a nut. Constantly spinning the tires in as many gears as I could muster, speed shifting, jumping, off road "pretending to rally race" and with over 200K miles never had a transmission problem. The electrical system finally put that car to rest. Perhaps Saab should take some tranny pointers from the Germans? My wife's 9-5 wagon uses an auto from Japan. Probably the best auto ever fitted to a Saab. Looks like they got wise on that one at least.
