Transmission informations... Posted by Andrew [Email] ![]() ![]() |
When at my Saab guru's shop today getting Heater motor/shroud bits, I asked re his claims of 9000 trans failure histories.
He took me over the 'parts' area of his shop where there were 5 late model 9000 5spds neatly shelved waiting 'rebuild'. One had a pinion brg failure, one was siezed: suspected output brg failure, two had their output bearings (or the circlip) chew their way thru the case into the bell housing, one had a non working reverse gear. He maintains that there is a real and apparently continuing problem with bearings in the 9000 transbox...especially the output shaft items.
He further went on to say that the 9000box is not nearly as failure prone as the c900.. he sees a lot of these with stripped layshaft gears (2nd mainly) but this is a combo of understrength parts and that 900 owners in general often beat a lot harder on their poor cars, however the 9000 fortunately does not suffer this particular problem.. but neither variant are the 'strongest' transmissions built.. by any stretch of the imagination.
In sumary he impressed on me that ANY new noises inna 9000 box are cause for concern.. slight whirring on trailing throttle is often a sign of the output bearing dying....reportedly one customer's trans abruptly siezed tearing out all the mounts and denting the hood in the process... some fun.
