Sump removal (long) Posted by Gene N [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
After months of fretting about whether I should replace my balance shaft chain, the main timing chain snapped! The car is a 1991 9000 turbo with 120K miles and an uncertain past. I pulled everything apart to see how bad the dammage was. Apparently after the chain broke, it jammed up in the bottom of the timing cover and managed to chew up the timing gear on the crankshaft. On the bright side, I know now that the balance shaft crank gear is the old non-hardened style and was worn quite badly, so that's on the list of things to replace.
There appears to be quite a bit of metal from the timing gear down in the sump. I've run a magnet through there to pick up some pieces, but I have just about convinced myself that the sump has to come off the car.
Here is my question. In the shop manual it says to remove the bolts from the engine mounts and "slightly" lift the engine before removing the sump. How high do you have to lift to get the sump to clear? With the head off there is not much to hold onto and I would like to get an idea of how high the engine has to move. I'm thinking of bolting the lifting eye from the head to the torque arm bracket hole and using a lifting beam. Any thoughts?
Thanks.
