I've replaced a few idler pulleys in '88 9000Ts, and I've never had to use a different belt, or go to an automatic tensioner.
The serpentine belt tensioner pulley has gone to a plastic unit. I know this because I had the bearings go, and the new unit was plastic. Then my AC compressor seized, which broke the AC belt, which knocked the serpentine belt off the tensioner pulley. But since the belt was still being driven by the main pulley, it chewed through the plastic pulley. That wouldn't have happened with a metal pulley. Oh, was I venting? Sorry.
I would call up one of the mail order folks that advertise on this BB. I've had good luck with Sobstory, but that's just me. I've gotten idler and tensioner pulleys from them, and they fit. And it's still the standard belt. I've done this for two different '88 9000T's.
