Gas Gauge malfunction

My son came home today with his 92 9000s and said the gas gauge said it was empty when he has 3/4 in the tank. So the gas gauge was on empty, the gas light was on the arrow on the low fuel EDU was blinking and Error was reading on the EDU. So I took it to the gas station to fill it up (he is 17 any questions). I only put four gallons in it to fill it up. When I got back in and started it everything was showing normal, except the gas gauge, it showed a little over 3/4 full. I asked him later today if it was working OK and his said it did it again, but now it is working fine.
I cleaned the connections on top of the gas tank. The gauge stayed at 3/4 of a tank and it showed tha I had 298 miles to go on the computer.
I got the call the other night that he was stuck. The gauge still showed 3/4 on if but if was bone dry. After I filled it up the gauge showed empty, the low fuel light was on, the blinking arrow was blinking, and the check engine light was on. On the way home everything went back to normal. Then tonight I checked it and the same thing. Gas gauge shows empty, low fuel light on, the flashing arrow on, and it shows zero miles left. Oh yes the Error still come up when started. Any idea's???????
