Finally have a weekend free to go to a salvage yard north of Albany, NY that has a door the color of which matches with my 94cs front passenger side door. The door was damaged when my daughter backed the car up on the driveway with the door open and hit my other car.
So I set out at 6:30AM Saturday morning. Arrived at Jerry Brown Auto Parts in Queensbury, NY at around 10:30. Was quite disappointed to find the door, although the same exact color, was dented near the hinge. They have two more doors. But wanted upward $350. Needless to say, I was planning to go to the contingency, Rum's Garage in Orange, MA, when Jerry Brown failed me, figuring I was going to spent the entire day driving the SAAB getting what I wanted. So I called ahead telling him I was coming anyway knowing he lives on the premises.
Rum's Garage is so far out of nowhere I was surprised I found it. But again, When I did, it is hard to miss because there are so many SAABs congregated in one place. I was further surprised to see so many SAAB carcasses hidden in a grove because I have never seen that many in my life. In my entire trip I didn't see a single 9k yet I came across at least four in the small town of Orange, MA.
Wow, Rum's garage is something only a SAAB owner could dream for, a salvage yard exclusively for SAABs which is dirt cheap. Naturally I found my door. He threw in a fender which has a tiny dent in the corner for free. By the way, I knew his price was far better ($150 for the door) even before I came. The only reason I didn't go to him first was the color. While there, I also had my eyes set on a set of leather seats which he (I am sorry I never got his name) said he could arrange to somehow deliver to me in his monthly car auctioing trip to Penn. Although Rum's is a SAAB owner's haven, it is too far from me to pay another homage.
By the time I came home to NJ, it was 6:30PM. How does one justify spending 12 hours on the road, logging 650 miles in a day just to get a car door? I can't say it was wise. I can only have the consolation that there were some beautiful scenaries in New England (probably will be even better ones a month later when the leaves start to change color), it was a marvelous day and the car runs extremely well. I was averaging 75 to 95 mph along the way. Needless to say gas mileage suffers a little at consistent high speed. It consumes almost two tankful of gas.
One more thing, I didn't feel a bit tired after spending the entire day in the driver's seat. I was not sure if it is because it is fun to drive or if the seat is better designed. Of couse I have forgotten all about back aches and sore joints even after a few hours of driving in non-SAAB cars I used to own and I have no interests of remembering them.
