Transmission question

My cousin's 92 9K Turbo has transmission problems. Apparently reverse no longer likes to engage (at all) he justs gets a grinding. I was told that he started the car and thought he'd put the shifter in nuetral (but hadn't) then dumped the clutch in reverse. Needless to say, not the best idea (at least not when in gear). He rebuilt the transmission a couple years ago (2-3) but I don't know if reverse was involved or not.
Anyway he's found a used transmission from a non-turbo (he was a Saab Tech for a few years so it should match up). My question is this: Will the different gear ratios adversely effect anything? He said it's got a different final drive ratio that should make it accelerate EVEN faster. Can a non-turbo tranny hold up to a 2.3T with a few mods (open cone filter, swedish dynamics cylinder head and DIY turbo housing smoothing)? You can see a pic of his car and mine at the page below.
Any suggestions are welcome, he's already got the transmission. He has the ability and the tools to do most anything. (maybe using just what parts he needs from the used tranny). I'm not a mechanic so I posted this question here DUH!
Thanks in advance for any and everything
Matt

P.S. He's still driving it, his winter car is not yet ready to hit the road, so he's making due without reverse for the time being.
