I forget the exact equation, but it is proportional to the length of the tube and inversely proportional to the radius to the fourth power, IIRC. Is this Pouseille's (sp) law? Therefore, you would get more shower flow with 3/4" line up to the shower and 1/2" fittings than with 1/2" throughout.
So this might lead one to think that you should stay large diameter for as far as possible. However, as mentioned, you have the cooling of exhaust gases which diminishes their volume. The only way to know how much of an effect this causes is to measure exhaust gas temps, like nt moore said.
My approach was to stay at 3" through the cat, then drop down to a smaller size. Not sure if this is the best way, but it seems to be what many others have done.
