With a mechanical meter the resistance front to back ratio will need to be at least 10:1. They produce enough current/voltage potential to forward bias the junction under test. If a digital meter is used there may be a diode symbol on the meter; use it to test the device. It will show the voltage developed across the junction; .65V ~~.7V would be the lowest reading you should see and the other polarity would be (MAX like open leads) O.L. out of limit of meter. Leg to case, case to leg, leg to leg & rev.. A LED would show 1.2V as that is its forward biased conducting voltage
