Hi, my name is Satoru. Sorry for a long post.
First, here are the specs for my SAAB
1995 SAAB 9000CS Turbo Scarabe
Mileage: 176,369 miles
3rd owner
I just bought it used this past May. A couple of weeks ago, it suddenly began smoking out of the exhaust pipe (white smoke--see link for a photo). I took it to a local SAAB here in
Boston (Charles River SAAB in Watertown) and was told to come back after a while when they could get me a loaner car.
The symptoms were thus: For the first few minutes after starting the engine, it would smoke a lot. Then, after I've been driving for a while, it would settle down. When it was bad, I could be waiting at a red light, and the smoke would literally fill the intersection---people would be staring---terrible ;-p
Anyway, since it was pretty bad, I took it to a local gas station and had a guy check it out. He threw in a couple of new valves (that were rotting away according to him) and the smoke seemed to get better.
Yesterday I took the 9000 to SAAB and...well, here is the diagnosis:
---------
The technician inspected the car and found the PCV valve missing causing excessive pressure into the crankcase. Found car was smoking upon roadtest. Performed diagnostic and determined that the turbo is worn and smoking. The car also has a headgasket that is leaking oil externally and may also be leaking internally contributing to the smoke from the tailpipe. With 176,369 miles on the engine there may also be some smoke as a result of worn piston rings.
Turbo replacement $1,695.00
Headgasket replacement $1,150.00
May want to perform compression and leakdown test on cylinders to be sure that no other major engine work is neccessary.
---------------------
So....I guess my question is this: if the SAAB guy says this, is this the final word? Do I need to replace my Turbo and headgasket, or is it worth getting a second opinion? (btw, I did notice today that the coolant in the radiator tank seems to be leaking away...I topped it out only 3~4 weeks ago, and the level drop is very visible. The headgasket probably DOES need to be replaced ;-p)
Also, are these prices pretty much what I'd have to be paying anywhere else?
I'm sorry for these dumb questions...not only is this my first SAAB, this is my very first car and frankly I don't know what to do...
Any comments, suggestions, and help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry again for the long post
