You won't hurt the motor.
If you can find a manual fan controller in junkyard, use it for the resistor.
You should be getting a DC voltage in on the small wire to the controller from the ACC unit. 0-5V I believe has been mentioned as the level although 0-12V wouldn't surprise me. Read all the past postings on it.
A 9V battery neg to grd and + to input will test the transistor controller by faking an input signal. Should use a current limiting resistor of say 1 K ohms.
