Usually if an engine is oil starved, it will show up as scoring or wear that eventually reduces oil pressure. Several things come to mind, but not having heard the sound, they are all guesswork on my part.
The first would be a leaking hydraulic lifter. At low rpms, the amount of oil that is supplied is insufficient to completely pump up the lifter, but at higher rpms, the oil supply can overcome the leakage rate.
The second would be the timing chain. Lower rpms, less tension, higher rpms, tension is more uniform.
The last would be a loud injector. Again, this would be load dependent since more gas requires the injector to open and close at a higher frequency.
Just guesses...Also, try using an auto stethoscope to isolate the area of the sound. An engine tear down sounds drastic for the sysmptoms you describe.
