misbehaving. This is the black one mounted behind the radiator with three small-diameter hoses leading to it, plus an electrical connection. It allows your ECU to increase boost beyond the level the wastegate would normally permit.
Some people have successfully cleaned these valves (search for previous posts) but the first thing is probably to find someone who will lend you one that is known to be good, fit it (very quick job) and see what happens. Try to borrow one from an Aero, and keep track of which hose goes where. A new replacement is over $100 – once again, specify engine and year.
The other valve that can misbehave is the so-called "hooter valve" that bridges between the intake run from air filter to turbo, and that from turbo to throttle body. It's black plastic with two biggish hose connection, one little tube to the front, and nothing electrical. This is quite cheap to replace unless you go for something after-market.
Having said that, my engine only really performed properly when I replaced the Direct Ignition unit (big red thing) so keep that one in reserve, since the ECU may be backing off because it doesn't like what's happening with the ignition. But I had an engine miss that was obviously ignition-related, which you do not report.
