Years ago while letting a client drive my '82 C900T, the idiot absent-mindedly rammed the gearbox into reverse without disengaging the clutch, and thereafter it manifested a clicking noise in neutral like you describe. My presumption was that a tooth was broken from one of the gears, which may be your problem. However, it could be heard when the car was idling and stationary. Can the click in the '94 Aero only be heard while moving?

In my case, the tranny worked perfectly 'til I sold it years later, and I never noticed any ill effects from the broken tooth.
