I therefore can't really say it's the synchros, since all the synchros were new at that point. Now, it will actually go into first if you are rolling, but you really have to force it, which is not something I make a habit of doing. Occasionally, I can get it to just slide into first (don't try this in baseball, I suspect) by double clutching, but why bother? If I am coming to a stop obviously I don't need to be in gear, if I am getting going, I can start in 2nd. For that matter, I can start in 2nd from a stop. Not quite as well as in my Dad's 4-speed Ford F150, but certainly 2nd can provide smooth enough starts without much ado.
The only time I ever go into first when I am rolling is if I'm in stop and go traffic and I'm rolling about 5 mph or less, where I want to just creep along at idle in first. Yes, sometimes traffic does move that slow, my car hates it.. :)
