I always completely reinstall the cap when checking the level. You have to wait a while to let the oil settle on the stick before trusting the level. All the others are right: You have wait a while to get a true reading. I found on a recent trip that I couldn't get a true reading at a simple pit stop - I think you have to wait more like 15 to 30 minuttes to get a true reading.
