Kory,
Here are a few possibilities:
1. Sticking or misadjusted throttle cable. Have someone sit in the car and press and release the gas pedal - make sure it's returning all the way to idle.
2. Misadjusted throttle stop screw. When the gas is released, the little arm on the throttle body comes to rest against a screw. Some confused person, attempting to change the idle speed, may have messed with this screw.
3. I left this one for last since it's the most expensive! Unfortunately the most likely also - the AIC valve. It's a little electrically-operated valve that is controlled by the fuel-injection computer, and is supposed to control the idle speed. Sometimes cleaning it helps, but replacement is often required and cost can be in the $250 range just for the part.
Oh - one more thing - I wrote the above with the assumption that the car does not have traction control. If it does, that's a whole different can of worms!
