If the blade is not having close to 90 degrees agle with the glass the blade (old or new) starts to jitter. In this case the wiping on the other direction might work ok. (Sounds your case?)

Cure: Adjust the wiper arm by bending it so that the blade will have 90 degree angle (~vertical direction compared to the glass). This requires patience since you might need to repeat it several times to get the things right. Also the problem might re-occur later on but then you can do the trick again.

Other that might cause this kind of problems it the spring "inside" the wiper arm. By time the spring looses the power and the blade is not pushed onto the glass enough.

Cure: Change the whole arm or try to find a new spring. Some might even try to do a new heat treatment for the spring.

If the nut is loose in the wiper arm shaft then you lose the bores on the shaft (by time will be worn out). In this case your wipers are not completing the whole wiping sequence (from low end to high end) and there might be some jitter. Then you have a problem,,, might need a new mechanism , somehow re-bore the shaft, new wipter arms etc. I have used once (in non-saab) a very soft iron thread to make the bores stick to the arm.

Some jitter may be causes also if the "bearings" of the shafts are dry / having corrosion i.e. they are low on grease. You may need to smoothen the surfaces and re-grease and assemble the mechanism.

Also jitter occurs when the bearings of the shafts are too loose,,, in this case several things can be applied... But maybe most commonly the mechanism needs to be changed.

Also it might be good to check that any of the screws/nuts of the mechanism are not loose.

Hope this helps a bit. Start with the case #1...
