a strip of reenforced rubber that has 4 studs bonded to it. If the studs have separated from the rubber, no amount of tightening of the nuts will help. Have someone move the gearshift lever while you look at the shift coupler, and I think you will see the problem. If you don't see the rubber separate, then the problem is somewhere else. But the most likely candidate is the coupler.
