9K's have a history of pictogram problems, but my second ('91 9KT) was better than my first ('86 9KT), and the third ('95 Aero) better than the second. On the '91, about once per year, I had to remove the bulbs and clean the contacts after the rear indicator lights would illuminate, which would fix it for another year.
The '86 was constantly giving problems which were never completely rectified despite efforts by the dealer and at least one factory upgrade. The '95 has yet to show a false indication in the 3½ years I've owned it.
It has been recommended that having different brands of bulbs can cause a false indication and that changing bulbs in pairs is best, but I haven't had this problem on my cars, as I've never changed bulbs in pairs.
It is my understanding that the pictogram will give a bulb-out indication when the voltage difference between right and left drops below a certain threshold, whatever that may be. In many cases you will get a bulb-out indication when there is no visual difference between the output of the bulbs. It is an excellent idea that developed into a flawed result, though from my experience it has improved over the years.
