strange incident today...need opinions

I was repairing some of the elements in my rear defogger with the special paint earlier today. While testing for breaks in the continuity with a test lamp I had the ignition in the ON position (engine not running) for maybe 15 minutes. When I was done, I attempted to start the car. The engine cranked slowly, would not turn over, and all of the console/ dash lights flashed rapidly accompanied by an equally rapid clicking sound. The condition with the lights/ clicking also was present with the ignition left in ON position. I checked the battery with a volt meter and it read 12V. About an hour later, I tried to start the car again and it started perfectly. The dash volt meter showed normal readings (13.5V). I did notice, however, that the clock was off by a couple of hours. Any explanations are welcome.
