ABS Wizards - Help Please

I recently picked up an 88 9K turbo with a few problems. The one "Biggie" shill left is an ABS issue. On start up the ABS and Brake lights illuminate and go off after a period of time. They remain off until the end of a braking stop. Nearly always, they come on while I am stopped (with my foot still on the brake) or just before the car comes to a stop. I assumed the accumulator to be bad and was going to replace it with another that I have. I removed the unit on my replacement first to see how difficult it would be and it came off with a reasonable amount of force. I attempted to remove the one on the car but succeeded only in rounding the hex on the top of the accumulator. I got a good bite on the top with vice grips and still couldn't remove it. Before I destroy it I thought I would try a different approach first. Is there any chance that the brake fluid has enough air or water in it that a fluid change might correct the problem? I don't think so but I might give it a try. The car drives fine and if not for the indicators I would have no hint of a problem. Any good suggestions for getting the old accumulator off??
