Turbo shaft separation. How common?

Bought used '93 9KCSE 106K mi and after two days, apparently the turbo shaft has separated from the implellers. Car now drives on what seems like base boost(?- needle moves, but never enters the yellow). Fortunately I've also purchased a parts car(same all but interior), but is this separation common (read: worth the trouble of swapping in the parter's phenomenal (~now at least~) turbo?
Have checked other possibles (solenoid valve), etc. and confirmed by fingering the impellers which turn effortlessly (too much so) while the same feel on the parts car's turbo is "just right" (for what would seem to be attached to the compressor wheel, etc.)
Input appreciated...
