'91 9kt with 127K miles.
About 1000 miles ago, completed a top end and balance shaft/timing chain rebuild. There was nothing wrong with the cylinder head - While I had it off for the work under the timing cover I decided to get the head reworked. Great long-term plan, right? Well, considering that I had to install it twice, no (head was slightly warped, but first rebuilder said it was fine). I also decided to re-hone the cylinder walls, although (sound of me kicking myself) the original honing marks remained. I may have overdone it on cylinders 2 and 3; I was much nicer to cylinders 1 and 4.

I'm now burning a quart of oil every 500 miles. That white smoke I saw when first driving the car after the reassembly was, I guess, a little oil and not coolant. There is no foam in the oil or oil in the coolant.

Compression testing from today:
cyl 1: max psi 175; 150 psi after 3 cranks; 185 psi after oil squirted in.
cyl 2: max psi 171; 140 psi after 3 cranks; 180 psi after oil.
cyl 3: max psi 180; 150 psi after 3 cranks; 190 psi after oil.
cyl 4: max psi 173; 150 psi after 3 cranks; 185 psi after oil

Also, cyl 1 leaked down slowly, with a loss of 5 psi over 15 seconds from its max value. The other cylinders didn't. The max psi attained in each cylinder was usually after 8-10 cranks (ie, full crankshaft revolutions).

Spark plugs show black soot on cyl 2 and 3. There was oil on the spark plug threads on all 4 cylinders.

Could I have trashed an oil ring with debris from honing or from cleaning off my piston crowns (used brass wire brush)? Leaking valve stem seals?

Please help me figure this one out. Losing sleep at night.
