The "Gold" filter was dropped by Pep Boys close to a year ago, and a few months after that, Delco discontinued its production ***EXCEPT*** for Corvette sizes (PF-52 ... also fits many domestic GM engines). For a few months the UPF 53 was available through gmpartsdirect.com but now they are gone from that site. There may be a few lying around in parts warehouses or on the shelves of stocking Delco distributors. Too bad, it really was the best.
I published in NINES when the filter was discontinued and recommended that people stock up. I also published when I learned that Delco was discontinuing the importation of the English made PF53 and PF13 size filters in favor of the American made version. Saab still distributes the English filter. While the Delco engineer I was in contact with made the obligatory "same high quality" assertion, there is no doubt that the English filter's construction results in a much greater amount of filtering medium in a given sized package. With the relatively small size of the current filter (pf-53) that is important and a strong motivator to use the Saab labelled filter rather than the American version. Even so, the Purolator Pure One is possibly better than the Saab filter - certainly it's the best filter currently in production for which we have performance data.
