review of poly control arm & rear swaybar bushings

After being very unhappy about the handling of my '93 9000 CSE turbo for some time, especially in comparison to the neutral handling of a classic 900, I recently put on Energy Suspension polyurethane rear swaybar bushings, and then Superflex polyurethane rear control arm bushings, in that order. The poly swaybar bushings made a subtle, but distinct improvement in the feel of the rear end, with a moderate reduction in the 9K's horrible understeer. About a week after that I put on the poly rear control arm bushings, and found a HUGE improvement in the overall handling: much less sensitivity to road crown & cross winds, and a great reduction in understeer (although still not quite as neutral as a 900). The car also takes a "set" now, which it never did before. Prior to this, I had OEM rubber rear control arm bushings on it (less than 1 year old, and I still have stock shocks & springs at 220K miles), and it always seemed the car had excessive caster. A total of about $30 in parts, and a few hours work (assuming one did everything right...which I didn't!). I'm very surprised that Saab didn't use similar bushings in production, as the ride comfort & vibration are about the same as before. The odd thing is that I had driven other 9000's with similar mods and was never really impressed with the handling.
