Do a search on "speed sensor" or "transducer". I've posted a number of messages associated with my similar experience. Botton line is that either the transducer is dead, there is a wiring fault to the transducer, or the transducer gear in the transmission is wiped. The first two can be easily checked by removing the transducer from the transmission and checking for a make-break signal with a ohm meter. Transducer itself is about $80 or so but wiring fault appears to be more common. The gear also requires removing the transducer but take a real good look at the gear. Mine had two teeth worn off so that it could not make good contact with the spiral gear in the box. It takes a hard look as it does not take much for the teeth to be worn out of contact. In any event, $10 part, 15 min. job. There was a service bulletin on this bit, but your gearbox would not have been included as it was specific '95-96 MY, but still a possiblity.
