Survival kit paid off: Alternator gave up in the middle

of nowhere (florenceville, new brunswick) on Sunday where in this supertiny town everything is closed and or non existant. At cruising speed, the ACC start flashing and since my favorite EDU display is VOLTAGE, I saw it go from 14V to 8.4V when all stopped working.
It was windy cold (-8C) morning (10AM), 400KM from home. I had plenty of time to swear at the Saab Engineers for putting the alternator where it is: A major pain to get at the top bolt (no clearance for 5/16 allen key socket), saab:thanks for the ROUND bolt head, it helps a lot ! (sarcarme!)
How about those F#@$%G bolts hoding the power steering plate ? Quels IDIOTS!!!
2 hours later, the best thing I could do is to buy a new battery which carried me to the next big town (fredericton, the capital!!).
It took 2 of us, a garage and $80 to get my spare Alternator on the car. I was home by 10PM.
PS: I should have hit the alternator really hard with a hammer it might have gotten me home ($richer)...
