I drive in Hong Kong, 40k to work and 40k home again, in my bog-standard 1993 9k-CD with auto gearbox and 90,000k on the clock, using unleaded fuel of unknown octane level. In summer I have the air-con on max-cold, all the time. On our "highways" I just might get to 60kph, not fast enough to get into 4th gear. In town, it's all 1st and 2nd gear stop-start stuff. The trip-computer tells me I'm getting 28.5 mpg (it's set for the only true units of measurement, which are Imperial, of course!)True consumption, calculated from mileometer readings and fuel taken on board, averaged over three months, shows consumption as just a shade over 29 mpg.
So there.
