Well I shouldn't say "almost" - there's no way I would have bought that '85 900 from that weasel today. I saw it in the paper this morning and thought it was worth a try - When I went over to see the car I was impressed - though not a turbo - not even an "S" this blue 1985 900 three door was pretty nice looking. I came later in the evening and the guy had it running - car sounded like a Farm-All tractor with no muffler - guy said "well I don't mind the sound too much - you could just fix it with a little muffler tape..." Then I took it for a drive - much to my surprise the middle of the seat had somehow disappeared and it felt like I was driving a toilet around minneapolis. The steering was passable - a little flutter in the wheel - the brakes were terrible - at one point I wondered if they'd stop me at all - the dashboard lights on this 900 also seemed to wax and wane with the tachometer - I assume that the alternator was on the way out. The gearshift also seemed "loose" though this seems to be a common property of early (pre 1994) 900's... did I mention that it felt like I was driving a toilet around minneapolis?
The guy kept referring to is as "just cherry man" He claimed to have done several repairs (ball joints and a CV, as well as the "drive axle" I thought there were just two CV's and inner and and outer - what the hell is a drive axle? At any rate I passed up his asking price of $850 and went to teach my class.
I'm curious though - as much of a jerk as the guy was (lying to me through his teeth) how much would you have paid for the car. In Minnesota 5-speed 900's with no rust are relatively rare. Did I pass up a "good" deal?
I'd love to hear your opinions.
