I've had to replace the ignition amplifier module, $40-75 depending on how fast you need it, as well as the distributor itself. Now, I went with a used distributor, so that only cost me $75 total including installation. Have you priced out a rebuilt/used distributor lately, though? The worst part about both of these failures, which incidentally, produce exactly the same symptoms, is they are horribly intermittant. As any electronic repair technician will tell you, that's the worst kind of problem. It would fix itself, sometimes for months, then come back, leaving you with a completely dead car.
At least DI, when it goes out, seems to give plenty of warning and even weeks of bad running before it leaves you stranded, from what I've read on here.
Still, I suppose I paid less to replace my ignition amp and distributor, but think of the huge headaches to have my car towed like three times, once from 50 miles away from my house. Thank god for Pemco insurance being the ONE that towing companies accept, and fortunately, the car always seemed to break down right next to a nice person's house that let me use their phone (no cell phone).
