Joe,
I had to remove the steering column from my 9kCD, which does not have the externally adjustable reach of the wheel, but which can be adjusted mechanically (did the BB know that?), and which DOES have exactly the same set-up as far as the steering column goes. This was to replace the upper column support bearing. After stripping the column bare (steering wheel etc. off) when I tried to pull the splined sections of the steering column apart it was a no-go. I had to use almost a can of WD40 during the "Thousand hammer-taps" treatment of the splined sleeve on the shaft. Took about 3 hours of tapping (with a tack-hammer)and waiting-for-WD40-penetration, but it eventually came free. Rust was the problem, not a lot, but the fit is s-o-o-o tight that just a little was enough to "lock" the two shafts.
Hint:- pad the base of the steering column, down on the floor, with LOTS of towelling, and cover the rest of the floor with LOTS of newspaper. WD40 really makes a mess of the carpets.
Be patient and use the tack-hammer VERY lightly. It's the number of taps, not the force of each tap which matters.
