Are you doing fast starts? Hard stops? Short trips? All are hard on gas mileage.
Since I was your age (over 30 yrs ago), I've tried to find ways to drive economically. I don't think a brisk accel. is all bad, as long as you come up to speed and hold it. Then pick a gear where you are not racing the engine. Holding a very steady gas pedal in the 'green' rpm range of your tachometer is the most efficient maintenence speed. I've known folks who like to pump their gas pedal- not efficient.
Anticipate! I look ahead several stop lights, and try to adjust my speed to hit all the lights without stoping. When there is traffic, I coast up on it rather than accelerating up to a stop. Hopefully, I won't have to stop, lots of energy used in getting going from a dead stop. When I do have to stop, I coast again.
Get the picture? I'll bet you can find a hundred ways to drive more efficiently. Give it a try. I know that it can make a 25% and more difference in gas mileage.
How is your highway mileage? Next time you have a 20-50mile trip on the expressway, try putting on the cruise and seeing what you can get. Reset the mileage computer, and take the readout. Speaking of the mileage computer, that little line below your speedo gives you pretty immediate feedback on how well your conservation efforts work.
You did not say whether you have manual or auto trans. The auto is less efficient by design, and seems to be much less efficient on 9000s. Below is discussion of mileage. Your's may not be too far off if you are only doing aggressive in town driving.
Are you following the recommended maintenence schedule? If so, then you have clean filters, oil, and spark plugs. Is it running rough? You may have shaky plugs or DI. It may be worth a trip to a good Saab mechanic for advice. If he is a nice guy, he'll give you advice on how to fix it yourself, so you can save lots of $$$.
