My car used to make a popping sound rather than a glug-glug. There is actually a service bulletin about this that talks about a "water hammer", similar to what happens with your plumbing. The front sunroof drains used to empty out down by the wheel wells, but when they installed ABS in 1989 (I think that was the reason), they moved the drains to the aquarium and removed the covers from the ends of the tubes. What happens is that at speed, the aquarium becomes pressurized and the water gets pushed back.
The solution is to get the rubber one-way valves that are used in the rear sunroof drains, and put them on the tubes that drain into the aquarium. If you want to see what the valve looks like, look for a rubber nipple right behind the rear mud flap. To install the tubes, remove the aquarium cover and find the plastic tubes as they leave the A-pillar and enter the aquarium. On the right side of the car, it goes under the evaporator housing. On the left side of the car, it is near the wiper motor. Remove any cable ties holding the tube (these sometimes contribute to the problem), and push on the rubber valve. The one on the right was easy to get to, but the one on the left required removal of the ABS and Jetronic boxes.
You will have to get the rubber valves from the dealer, but they were cheap--about $3.50 each.
Hope this helps.
